Established on September 1, 1961, through Republic Act No. 1387, Mindanao State University (MSU) is a premier public research university system in the Philippines. Founded as a cornerstone of the government's response to the "Mindanao Problem," the institution was the brainchild of Senator Domocao Alonto. Its primary mission is to promote national integration by providing quality education to the diverse communities of the Mindanao, Sulu, and Palawan (MINSUPALA) regions, particularly focusing on the integration of Muslim and other cultural minority groups into the national mainstream.

Headquartered in Marawi City, the MSU System has evolved from a single campus into a supra-regional powerhouse with eight autonomous campuses, including MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology and MSU-General Santos. As the second-largest state university system in the country, it serves over 69,000 students. MSU is renowned for its academic excellence in fields such as Engineering, Agriculture, Fisheries, Law, and Islamic Studies. Guided by its role as a "social laboratory," the university balances rigorous research and instruction with a unique mandate for peace education. With its scenic flagship campus overlooking Lake Lanao, Mindanao State University remains a vital symbol of hope, unity, and socio-economic development for the southern Philippines.
