University of Santo Tomas

Founded on April 28, 1611, by Archbishop Miguel de Benavides, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) is the oldest existing university in Asia and one of the world's largest Catholic universities on a single campus. Located in Manila, Philippines, it is a Dominican institution of higher learning that holds the prestigious titles of Pontifical, Royal, and the Catholic University of the Philippines. These titles reflect its historical significance, royal patronage from the Spanish monarchy, and its direct approval by the Holy See.

Originally established in Intramuros as a seminary to train young men for the priesthood, UST has evolved into a comprehensive research university. It moved to its current 21.5-hectare campus in Sampaloc in 1927 to accommodate its growing student population. The university is renowned for its academic excellence across various fields, including Theology, Canon Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, and Engineering. It has played a pivotal role in Philippine history, even serving as the country’s Department of Education during the late 19th century. UST is the alma mater of numerous national heroes, including Jose Rizal, and four Philippine presidents. Guided by its motto, "Veritas in Caritate" (Truth in Charity), it remains a center of excellence committed to the pursuit of truth and the moral formation of its students.
